Let’s bring more art to our communities!

This week, we’re talking about the importance of art in communities. PLACE believes art is vital to connecting us and inspiring us. That is why Via Sol is filled with opportunities to experience art, inside and out.

Happy learning and happy living!

Sincerely,

The PLACE Team,

The importance of having access to art:

Did you know communities that prioritize accessible public art and art education often see increased levels of community engagement and social bonding? Doesn’t that sound wonderful?

Art has been shown to create physical and mental space for people to connect with one another, with their community, with creativity and curiosity, and with perspectives from outside their own experiences. Communities interwoven with art are more likely to feel as though they are thriving, loved, and filled with life, which can empower those who live and work there to be more civically engaged.

There are artists and creatives everywhere, so let us all help our communities flourish by supporting the arts in our neighborhoods, our schools and libraries, our parks and common areas, and all of the places that bring us together.

We are filling Via Sol with art:

With this in mind, PLACE strives to fill Via Sol with opportunities for artists and creatives to share their work with the St. Louis Park community.

Right now, we are working with Jamie Marshall, former Executive Director for St. Louis Park Friends of the Arts and now with the MN State Arts Board, to identify artists for Via Sol’s most prominent art locations. This includes a nearly four-story mural facing the Cedar Lake Trail as well as multiple installations in and around the Urban Art Forest open to the public. Within the next few weeks, applicant artists will present their proposals to Jamie, a panel of local artists, and the PLACE team. PLACE believes artists should receive compensation for their work, so applicants who have made it to this stage will be paid a stipend to present their vision even if they are not selected in the end to create it for Via Sol.

In addition to these larger installations, Via Sol also features several communal balconies lined with stucco walls for our own resident creatives to display their work. Passersby may catch a glimpse of the exciting work happening inside, much of which is facilitated by the 18 live/work apartments for creatives. The live/work apartments feature high ceilings, good daylight, open floor plans with lots of space, and durable finishes. Ten of these have lower rents and are part of our 152 affordable apartments offered at Via Sol. In PLACE’s experience, creatives who do not need the additional space (and those who love art) are still drawn to places with live/work in order to be part of that supportive and inspiring community.

We cannot wait to see what amazing and imaginative creations will come to life and how Via Sol engages with the existing strong St. Louis Park arts community.
